Beyond AcadiaAfter the Great Expulsion in 1755, the descendants of François Savoie and Catherine Lejeune were scattered. Some of the Savoie moved to Quebec, which at that time was another French colony. Others were deported to the American colonies. Some were sent to St-Malo, France. Still more hid in the bushes, and later came to reclaim some of their land. According to Harry Savoy, author of Savoy/Savoie/Savois Families of Louisiana:
This is not an all inclusive list of Savoye deportees and prisoners. Since so many records have been lost or destroyed, this list can only represent part of the total. Its purpose here is to illustrate the reality that although many Savoyes evaded capture and deportation, a sizable number did not escape. In many cases, their last names were changed, either due to illiteracy (they didn't know how to spell their name), or conformance (Anglicizing the name so as not to stand out in the English territories). SACHS is sponsoring a research project to track the descendants of François Savoie and Catherine Lejeune. To see some of our work, visit the Savoie Master Database. Are you curious to know whether your family is related to the Savoies? Check our spouses page. Acadian DescendantsThe vast majority of the descendants of the Acadians live in either Canada or the United States. We've listed some of our favorite genealogy sites in both of these countries to assist you in your research.
